Hiring an advisor (financial planner, financial advisor, wealth manager, investment advisor, financial consultant – the industry jargon is endless!) can be daunting. It is time consuming, technical and the stakes are high. You want to get it right, but how do you know?
Here are some tips to help you get started.
Look for a CFP® Professional
CFP® stands for the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certification and is widely recognized as the highest standard of excellence for financial planners. An advisor’s professional designations and experience can tell you a great deal about her/his education and area of specialization. BSW’s experienced team includes attorneys, accountants, MBA’s and a range of advanced financial specialties such as CFA®, CFP®, CAIA®, CDFA, RICP®, CSRIC™, BFA™
Find a Fiduciary
Ask the advisor how they get paid. This will help you uncover any conflicts of interest. You want your advisor to get paid only for putting your best interests and financial needs first. A good advisor should be able to walk you through exactly what you are paying in a way that you understand and demonstrate the value you are receiving. This is why BSW’s fees are fully transparent and based solely on a percentage of the assets we are managing for you (typically 1% or less). Think twice about any advisor that is unable or unwilling to do this.
Find someone you like
When hiring an advisor, the best choice for you may come down to a personality fit. Take a gut check: do you enjoy and trust the person you’re sitting across from?
