July 1, 1992…Where were you? What was going on in your life? To help jog your memory, in the news, Braniff airlines went out of business, an earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale rocked Bear Valley, California, and Los Angeles was preparing to open the summer Olympic games, with Carl Lewis poised to become a star. The number one song was “Baby Got Back” by Sir Mix-a-Lot and the number one movie was Batman Returns, starring Michael Keaton. 30-year mortgage rates were at 8 1/8 and the ten-year Treasury note yielded 7.6%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average stood at 3354 and a share of Apple stock was $49. Then CEO John Scully had just introduced the most up-to-date Apple II computer, complete with floppy drive and an amazing color Trinitron screen!
On the same day, a one-woman investment shop opened for business in a nondescript office on the third floor of a historic building at the corner of Broadway and Pearl in downtown Boulder, Colorado, right next to What’s Up Food and Booze? You have to have lived in Boulder a long time to remember that one.
Late that year, the firm doubled. It doubled again, doubled again, and again until today it comprises sixteen professionals. Sixteen people who work every day on our singular mission to Make Life Better.
Let’s think about that for a minute – Make Life Better. It has proven to be fun and challenging to experience the different ways in which we’ve been able to do that for you. We have helped you educate your children, preserve your assets, climb Mt. Kilimanjaro, meet a lifelong goal of bicycling through Bali, set up global access to funds so one client could buy a sailboat and take a year off with his family to sail the world, and create a scholarship fund to enable students enrolled in your “How To Be an Entrepreneur” class at a local Hispanic High School, and attend the University of Colorado. The list goes on and on. Inside of BSW, our lives are better because we don’t have to work on our birthday!
Here it is July, 2012. The news today from Europe is not the continued financial crisis, but the fact that the football team of Spain crushed Italy to win the EUFA 2012 championship and London is preparing to open the summer Olympic games at the end of the month. The number one song is “Somebody That I Used to Know” by Gotye and the number one movie is the Avengers. 30-year mortgage rates are 3 5/8 and the ten-year Treasury yields a whopping 1.53%. The Dow Jones just closed around 13,000 and the price of a share of Apple is just over $600. CEO Tim Cook recently introduced the latest in a series of whiz-bang products: the third generation iPad.
Jump ten years from now to July, 2022. Where will you be? What will you be celebrating in your life? Will one of us have traveled into space? People who know us know that we are loathe to predict the future. There’s no way to know what the number one song or number one movie might be (although it’s a good bet that the latter will be a remake or prequel!). What we do know is that BSW Wealth Partners will be celebrating 30 years of making life better. And we all want to take this opportunity to thank every one of you who have helped us get where we are today, and who have helped make this incredible 20-year journey possible.
